White River Cousins: WAGGONER Family of Lawrence, Martin, & Greene Counties, Indiana

It is believed based upon some of the evidence available that Henry Waggoner I was born about 1733 and came to America from Germany in about 1751. He settled in Augusta co,VA in the part that became Russell co,VA. Not much is known about him; he is believed to have died in the 1798-1809 timeframe. According to one family researcher he served in the Fincastle County Militia during the Revolution.

On 6 Feb 1775 Henry Waggoner bought a plantation of 476 acres in Wythe co,VA from the original settler John Gillihan. This land was subsequently sold to Jacob Hedrick who sold it to Martin Staley. Martin Staley obtained a certificate for the land on 12 Sep 1782 from the Commissioners of the Loyal Company. Through some clerical error, a patent for this land was issued to Henry Waggoner in 1798. In 1809 Martin Staley brought suit against the estate of Henry Waggoner in Augusta County,VA to establish a clear title to his land. Henry Waggoner and Jacob Waggoner amongst others are named as heirs of Henry Waggoner I.

Henry and Jacob Waggoner appear on early tax lists of Russell co,VA which was erected out of Augusta County. In about 1805 the Waggoner family and the Sargent family made the trek West to Pulaski co,KY. About 1815 both families along with the Boone family, came up to Lawrence County in Indiana. There these families were the original settlers of Indian Creek twp.
