White River Cousins: WAGONER Family of DuBois & Martin Counties, Indiana

This family is believed to be unrelated to the Waggoner Family of Lawrence County and the North Part of Martin County. Any Waggoner research in Martin County must deal with both families for the sake of clarity. The name has been variously spelled Waggoner, Wagoner, and Wagner. My impression is that more members of this family used the Wagoner spelling. For purposes of intelligible indexing however, I use the Waggoner spelling in my files for both families.

It is believed that the progenitor of this line is Philip Waggoner who first appears in records in 1800 in Fayette County,KY. He came to DuBois County,IN in the 1830's. According to verbal family tradition amongst his descendants, his father was Gottlieb Waggoner, a Hessian soldier fighting for the British in the Revolution.

We invite examination of his record:

Philip Waggoner (ca.1770-ca.1850) of DuBois County

Census evidence would indicate that the sons came into the South part of Martin County in the 1845-1855 timeframe.

We invite examination of these records:

John Waggoner (ca.1808-ca.1872) of Lost River twp
Jefferson Waggoner (ca.1810-ca.1875) of Rutherford twp
George Waggoner (1813-1894) of Lost River twp
Lewis Waggoner (ca.1815-ca.1858) of Rutherford twp
Joseph Allen Waggoner (ca.1818-ca.1870) of Rutherford twp
