White River Cousins: STANFIELD Family of Orange, Martin, & Daviess Counties, Indiana

This is a branch of the ancient Quaker Stanfield family from North Carolina. In 1786 John Stanfield moved his family West from Orange co,NC to Surry co,NC. He was one of the Charter Members when Deep Creek Monthly Meeting in Surry co,NC, was established in 1793. He appears on the 1st Census of the US in Surry County.

In about 1805 he removed with his extended family to Otter Creek in Cumberland co,KY. He died there in 1815 and his will was proved in Cumberland co,KY on 17 Apr 1816 thereby establishing his descendancy. Some of his descendants remained in KY, others migrated to MO, and those of interest to us, began the trek North.

By 1820 the eldest son Thomas Stanfield was in Washington co,KY. In a few years he came up to Indiana and some children settled in the Quaker community in Orange County. In 1830 he was resident in Crawford County per the Census. He is believed to have died about 1835, probably in Washington co,IN.
